When bit players take the lead

Posted in

These are the actors we've seen in countless films, but never knew their name. Suddenly, they're playing lead roles.

John C. Reilly. Based on his info on IMDB, John C. Reilly has been acting in films since 1989. Most of which are good films that we've all seen. Starting with Casualties of War, We're No Angels and Days of Thunder. Taking bigger roles in Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and The Perfect Storm. All the time working his way up the ranks. Yet, it's only recently that he has started to shine on his own in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

My favorite films featuring John C. Reilly are:

  1. The Hours
  2. The Good Girl
  3. Gangs of New York
  4. What's Eating Gilbert Grape
  5. The Aviator

Paul Giamatti is proving himself to be quite the hidden talent. After taking a backseat in movies like Saving Private Ryan and Man on the Moon, he broke out in the movie Sideways. I didn't really get why everyone loved Sideways so much, but I was glad to see him in the part.

My favorite films featuring Paul Giamatti are:
    1. Lady in the Water
    2. The Truman Show
    3. Cinderella Man
    4. The Negotiator
    5. The Illusionist

Some other actors I'm waiting to see get their dues:

David Morse. I know you know this guy. He's been in everything. The Rock, 16 Blocks, Disturbia. The Green Mile and Twelve Monkeys are my favorites though.

David Strathairn has been in some big roles, but he's never really gotten the spotlight so much as he's played off the female lead. In The River Wild he was opposite Meryl Streep, in Dolores Claiborne it was Kathy Bates.
