Favorite Westerns

Posted in ,

I've never been a real big fan of older westerns, so please don't be offended that they're not on my lists. I do, however, love the newer westerns. Probably because I recognize the stars in them.

These are my favorites:

Young Guns and Young Guns II. I loved these movies. Loved them! Emilio Estevez as 'Billy the Kid', Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen as his gang. Everyone did a great job.

I don't know how accurate the story was but I did go to Lincoln County and found it fascinating to be in the jail where he was held and to know the history there.

Tombstone. Well, I didn't think anything could top Young Guns but I think Tombstone did it. Val Kilmer, as Doc Holliday, was brilliant. Whoever did casting should be commended. Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, Powers Boothe and even Charlton Heston star in this masterpiece of a western.

"I'm your huckleberry... " -Doc Holliday

"You tell 'em I'm coming... and hell's coming
with me" -Wyatt Earp

The Quick and the Dead. I was already a Russell Crowe fan but was glad to see him making movies here, in the States. I was thankful to Sharon Stone for the part she played in recruiting him for the movie.

I don't know how good her performance was in this but Leonardo DiCaprio, Gene Hackman and Gary Sinise picked up the slack.

Honorable Mentions:

3:10 to Yuma. I never saw the original but I liked this one. I don't know that I quite understand why Dan Evans (Christian Bale) had to do what he did. I think there were plenty of other ways to earn a son's respect. I also don't know how believable the ending was but that's okay. It was a good story.

See my review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I also really liked HBO's Deadwood with Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane. You should definitely pick that up on DVD if you missed it.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I checked out your profile and it turns out we have some other things in common as well. I have also been with my husband 9 years and we have a son :)

Unforgiven is an awesome western from the mid 90's that won some Academy awards.
Personally, I am not a fan of the John Wayne era of westerns, but I love the spaghetti westerns from the 60's starring Eastwood.

I thought about Unforgiven but couldn't remember it. I'm sure I liked it because I like Clint Eastwood too, but it's been too long. I'd have to watch it again.
