I'll say it, I don't like A Christmas Story. I think I have a specific sense of humor and this is the opposite of anything I think is funny. I don't know if it's because I'm female or what, I just don't get why everyone loves this movie so much.
Aside from the classic X-mas Movies, Jingle All the Way probably wraps up what I find humorous about Christmas. Specifically the scene where they play It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year as the shoppers go ape sh*t. Now that, to me, is funny in a very sad way.
What has happened to daytime tv? I stopped watching soaps when my son was born, but I'm re-thinking that decision when I see what my other choices are. For one thing, what is with all the court shows? We've got, People's court, Judge Judy, Joe Brown, Alex, Christine, Karen, Jeanine Pirro. Apparently they give a show to any judge who asks.
Then there's Steve Wilkos from Jerry Springer with his own show, like anyone wanted that. Tyra Banks has a show, Bonnie Hunt has one...again, who asked for this?
Tyra, you're never gonna be Oprah. Oprah got where she is because there was a time when women could relate to her, before she became one of the richest people ever to exist. You, Tyra, are a model, no one can relate to you.
As far as Bonnie Hunt goes, I'm sorry, but she is about as boring as I can imagine a person being.
So, basically, stay-at-home moms are out of luck.
Expectations, we all have them. When we see a movie with our favorite actor, we expect to like it. When we hear our fav artist has a new album coming out, we expect to want to buy it and play it out. So what happens when our favs don't meet our expectations? It sucks. here's my examples:
The Happening by M Night Shyamalan. I love everything M. Night has ever done and then this comes out and it looked soooo good. I could not believe how wrong I was. I watched it twice thinking I must have been mistaken the 1st time. No, not only wasn't I mistaken, but I found myself asking the question "did he make it bad on purpose". It was so bad, surely there was a method to his madness. No matter how I try and justify it the whole thing was just horrible.
I did not love the second season of Flight of the Conchords which is really disappointing because I loved the first season with a passion. Honestly, the first season was some of the funniest stuff I have ever seen.
To their defense, they admitted they struggled to make a second season and thus it doesn't look good for a 3rd season. I'm disappointed because I was hoping they could redeem themselves, but I'm still a huge fan and will look out for their cd's in the future.
Usually I do my reviews on my other blog, RnR Reviews, but I decided they might be more fitting here.
Most recently, I went and saw Funny People with Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Leslie Mann. I'm not usually an Adam Sandler fan, but my husband wanted to see G.I. Joe; and I was not about to sit in that sausage fest, so I decided to go see something else while he partook in some childhood fantasy. Honestly, timing wise, I didn't have a lot of options and thus, I was left with Funny People.
The one thing that gave me some hope going in was knowing that Judd Apatow had written it and I knew I'd liked some of his other stuff, Pineapple Express and Fun with Dick and Jane being a couple. Mind you, this was a small hope. After seeing this movie, however, I know the name Judd Apatow does not equal quality.
Talk about sausage fest, I have never heard so many references to men's junk as I did in this movie and I wish they said it that nicely. The language was just fowl and unnecessarily so. I mean some fowl language would have been fine, but this was overkill. Even James Taylor had a fowl mouth in this movie. That's crazy!
Once you get passed the language, which is hard to do, the movie didn't seem to have focus. It was like a man's idea of a heartfelt, meaningful drama and it missed the mark BIG time. I mean I shouldn't want the character to die, but I kind of did, especially toward the end. It was over two hours long and it felt like six. I don't know what the point was, but it made me question whether I should have seen G.I. Joe instead.
Football - So, I've mentioned that I'm a boxing fan, but don't confuse me for a sports fan. I live in KC and so baseball might as well be non-existent here. People do, however, go crazy over the Chiefs and I mean crazy. Everyone I know loves football, even my mom. It's insane to me. I have tried to give it a chance, but I don't have the patience for it. Games are so long and it seems like most of the time is spent getting into position for a play that lasts seconds before they have to stop and regroup. Forget about it, it's ridiculous.
Shoes, and Jewelry too for that matter. What is the fascination or should I say obsession for ladies and these materialistic things. We're supposed to be the more sensitive of the sexes and thus I think we should have our priorities more in tact. Don't get me wrong, I actually love winter hats and bags, but I would never spend hundreds of dollars on them just to be able to say I have a big name like Jimmy Choo shoes or whoever it may be.
Girl Rockers - I'm talking about all those girl "wanna be" rockers out there. The one exception being Hole and Evanescence. Yeah, I know Courtney Love can't sing, but it doesn't stop her from rocking and really rocking, not the lighthearted crap that the other bands put out. I'm sorry, I know I'll offend a lot of people, but Flyleaf and Paramore are on the top of that list for me. It's not that they can't sing, but I just don't like them is all.

Talking about Adam Sandler, brings me to Tom Green via Drew Barrymore of course. Wow, I have to say she has got such bad taste in men that there aren't even words for her. So, not only does Tom Green go on my lists for being one of the stupidest, most pathetic excuses for someone who passes as a comedian; but Drew Barrymore goes on my lists for having the worst track record when it comes to choosing a partner. Mind you, she isn't the worst woman, she is the worst person, man or woman.
I think it's especially bad because she is so beautiful and quirky, she could have anyone. Why does she pick these absolute losers. Now, I don't know if she was ever actually involved with Adam Sandler but you know she would be. I don't know, maybe she's still doing drugs after all because you'd have to be on some strong drugs to marry Tom Green.
From his time on Saturday Night Live, with his ridiculous opera man and stupid Halloween costume thing he always did, I have never been a fan of Adam Sandler. Stupid does not equal funny in my mind.
Now, he has some done some more serious things that I didn't mind him in. It's just as a comedian that I find him to be lacking. Well, I say that, but I also don't find him to be a believable love interest in romantic comedies. Of course, women do like funny men, but again, he's not funny. He's the guy any girl I know would be embarrassed to take around anyone because he's so stupid. Perfect for Drew Barrymore, but she's got a screw loose, so I don't know if she counts.
Spike Lee. If you read my Denzel post, then you probably knew this was coming. I was introduced to my first Spike Lee movie, Do the Right Thing in a film class. While there were aspects of the movie that I liked, I felt like the end ruined it for me.
It was like he was trying to make a point about racism but missed it himself. I actually believe, like with Denzel, that Spike Lee is racist. I believe that he uses his movies as an acceptable art form in which to express those views.
The fact is, I don't know that he even tries to hide it and I actually prefer he didn't. If he is racist, then I'd rather know it than not. It's better than pretending.
That's here nor there though because it's not the only reason I don't like him as a director. On top of that, I feel that his movies are too gritty with unnecessary sexual content. I realize that now, sexually explicit movies are all we see, but back in 1989 when that movie came out, it seemed really racy.
I do understand that many people completely disagree and that's fine, but this is how I feel about it.
Yeah, I'm saying it. Denzel Washington is over-rated. Now, is he handsome? Is he well-spoken? Does he seem like a nice guy? A gentleman? The answer is yes to all of those questions. However, if you ask if he's impressed me with his acting abilities, the answer is no.
I believe he plays the same character in every movie he does. I know Denzel fans are bound to come back with Training Day & American Gangster but guess what, I didn't buy it. Denzel is just not convincing as a bad guy. I am not intimidated by him in the least.
I believe his most convincing role was as Malcolm X because I do believe that he has similar ideas. In fact, I'm willing to say that I think Denzel is somewhat racist. He, like Spike Lee, is an acceptable racist within Hollywood. Of course, I may be wrong about that, but it's the impression that I get. I'm sorry if that offends anyone.
The story was about a woman (Halle) and her co-worker (Giovanni) trying to find evidence that a wealthy business man (Willis) had killed a friend. Not the most difficult of roles but she couldn't even pull that off. Her acting was so bad that I almost couldn't finish the movie. I actually found myself asking why her co-stars would ruin their reputations doing a movie with such a horrible lead.
Now, this isn't the first time a beautiful woman lands the lead even though she proves to be a terrible actress. In fact, that is the case with most beautiful, leading ladies out there right now. Yes, I'm talking to you Jessica Biel.
My problem, however, with Halle Berry is that she has won an Oscar. How can this be? What a joke it is to think that because a beautiful woman leaves her make-up off and messes up her hair, she is a good actress.
That year that she won her Oscar for Monster's Ball (2001), she was up against Judi Dench, Sissy Spacek, Renée Zellweger and Nicole Kidman. Come on, she shouldn't even be mentioned in the same group, let alone should she have won. I will say this, she looked amazing because, again, she is beautiful. She just isn't a great actress. I could give her "okay". She's an okay actress, but great, "no".
Another reason you know Halle Berry is not a "great" actress is that she actually went topless for the movie Swordfish. I watched it, thinking it must have been important for the movie. Not only was it not important, it is probably the most unnecessary scene I'd ever watched. So, she did it for nothing. Well, she did it for money; but if she considered herself a real actress, she wouldn't have. Not for that movie, not in that scene, not for that reason.♦DiggIt! ♦Add to del.icio.us ♦Add to Technorati Faves
As I see it there a few different types of bad movies. Here's what I've come up with so far, but feel free to share yours:
Traffic, the "it's got a lot of big named actors" surprisingly bad movie. Yes, I'm talking about the Michael Douglas, Benicio Del Toro, and a little bit of everyone else you can think of to throw into the pot, horrible movie. There's four hours of my life I won't get back.
Lost in Translation, the "what was the point?" bad movie. What was lost for me in this movie was entertainment. I find that I feel this way about most newer Bill Murray movies, I'm sad to say. Broken Flowers was another one I didn't understand why he'd waste his time with. The only thing I can think is that there just aren't a lot of good roles out now.
History of Violence, the "had great potential but blew it" bad movie. This is one of the few movies I have seen in the theater that I wanted to walk out on, but didn't because tickets are too freakin' expensive to do that anymore. I don't even remember what was so upsetting to me about this movie. Apparently, it wasn't memorable, for one. I just know I felt like it was a waste of potential because it looked so good on the previews, but just didn't deliver.
Eyes Wide Shut, the "what the %$*@?" bad movie. Here we have a case of a movie where you're not quite sure where it's going and so you follow, intrigued. Only to find that there is no resolution in the end. Instead, you're left wondering what the heck just happened. Now it is Stanley Kubrick and so I give it a break based on that, but I was disappointed none the less. Now, you may ask yourself why there are no B movies on the list. The answer to that is that B movies are not expected to be great and thus you aren't surprised if they're bad.♦DiggIt! ♦Add to del.icio.us ♦Add to Technorati Faves
At least with the others from the Blue Collar Tour, I feel like they're one of us. "Us" being the people from my region (Midwest/South). So, when they make jokes about the stupid things "we" do, they're included. Larry the Cable Guy, however, is so over the top ridiculous, that it comes off as if he stupefies his act so we idiots can relate. It's degrading and it only helps keep the stereotypes going that we're idiots. You can read more of my rant about that here.
So I plead with anyone from these areas not to go around spewing "git-r-done". It makes us look like the idiots he thinks we are.
Still, with all his faults people love him and I don't get it. I have no patience for actors who bring nothing new to their characters time after time.
That isn't to say that I've never enjoyed any of his movies. I like Nacho Libre. I liked Shallow Hal. I just need something drastically different from him because what he keeps doing is done already.
Now, I love most of the other members of the "Frat Pack" (Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Owen and Luke Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Carell) minus Jack Black and Owen is pushing it just because he's getting annoying. Vince Vaughn rules the pack but whatever. I like a lot of their movies. Dodgeball was awesome and Zoolander was completely bearable. meanwhile, Old School is the best comedy and do you know why? Ben Stiller and Jack Black didn't ruin it.
Quentin Tarantino. Yeah, I said it. Wanna fight about it? I put Quentin Tarantino because he is a man's director. He's crass and his movies lack meaning. While men like him for those reasons, I dislike him for them.
I know he has a following but I don't understand why and I'm definitely not in it.
